Our Story

The James family auctioning career began in Brush, Colorado in 1934 by Vernon Wiley James. He was the first to find interest in the auction business and began a family trade that has lasted for multiple generations. In 1939 he moved his family and business to Baudette, Minnesota where James Auction Service began. For many years, he served the area as the sole auctioneer.

Around 1950 he asked his son, Vernon Paul to join him in operating James Auction Service and in creating a family run business. They built up their service and spread their auction wings across Northern Minnesota. Many years later Vernon Wiley asked his grandson, Doyle when he was going to join the family business. His response was, “Right after I go to auction school, Grandpa!”

Doyle set off to start his auctioning career by attending auction school in Mason City, Iowa. Upon graduating he joined his Father and Grandfather in the summer of 1978 as the third generation auctioneer for James Auction Service.

The trio worked closely together serving the surrounding communities for many years. The torch was then passed down to Vernon Paul and son, Doyle. The two worked hard side-by-side and carried on what their father/grandfather had started so many years ago. Committing spring, summer and fall to the family business. There were many challenges and changes along the way but they always strived to expand and improve their business while upholding the values and dependability that James Auction Service has always been known for.

Doyle is now the sole auctioneer and has seen many changes through the years. His family and a few loyal companions have stuck with him and work hard to maintain a business that began over 80 years ago. Three generations of James auctioneers and a total of 152 years of combined auctioning experience is something that we all take pride in being a part of!
